Deputy Chief Minister is generally an optional post and is next to the Chief Minister. In the history of Tamilnadu, the first person to hold the office of Deputy Chief Minister was M. K. Stalin, who took office on 29-05-2009 and left on 15-05-2011. The Chief Minister during that time was Hon'ble Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi who is also his father and the head of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a powerful dravidian party in Tamilnadu and also a former ally of the UPA Government. Reasons for the creation of the post of Dy.C.M: Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, the then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu underwent a spinal chord surgery in the year 2009 at a famous hospital in chennai, which made him wheel-chair bounded, So unable to concentrate on many of the departments from his portfolio due to his health condition, he decided to allocate some departments to his son M. K. Stalin who also held the post of Local Administration Minister in his cabinet, thus resulting in the creation of the post of Deputy Chief Minister for the first time in Tamilnadu. But Kalaignar held the responsibility of Home Department by himself. Dr. Kalaignar holds the record for being elected as the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu for 5 times and also holds the record of winning his seat in every election from 1952 to till date spanning over a political career of over 70 years.
